If you like music and ever wanted to start playing a musical instrument yourself now is a perfect time. In our school, we have different courses for different musical instruments for absolute beginners. It doesn’t matter how old are you and if you ever played any instrument before. You can also try out a trial lesson absolutely for free. But first, you should ask yourself what instrument you would actually like to play and why. Because let’s be honest, learning takes time and interest. But as an adult, you have more ways to make the right decision for yourself.
How do we choose the right instrument for ourselves?
Before you decide on the perfect instrument, you should ask yourself some questions:
- What type of music do you like? You should concentrate on your taste in music. This seems like an obvious and easy question, but think it through very carefully. Maybe you are crazy about the bass I jazz, but it still might not be the right choice. A musical instrument might be a big investment of time and money, so make sure the style of music that you want to play is really worth it. What is it that makes your heart beat faster? And remember the limits of the instrument. For example, a guitar or piano will give you so much more options in playing different styles than a flute.
- Then there is also a question of difficulty and time required. How much time are you willing to put in? Are you ready to face the challenge? For example, playing a piano or drums is different from playing strings, where there are a lot of unpleasant feelings in your fingers, while you learn how to play strings.
- Where and why do you see yourself playing? There’s also a big difference in where you will be playing. Maybe you want to play with a group of your friends and have some jam sessions. Maybe you want to play only for yourself at home and never in front of an audience.
- What is your budget? Money is a very important question in choosing your instrument. Some instruments can be bought for 20 bucks while others, like piano or handmade violin, can cost you thousands of dollars, even if you buy the used ones. So it is very important to know how much money you are able to spend on an instrument.
- Where do you live, and where are you planning to practice? If you live in an apartment with thin walls, it is highly unlikely that your neighbours will be happy with you playing the drums every day.
- How far is the school you are planning to choose? If you decide to play the contrabass you will have to carry it with you to the school in your car, on public transport or walking. So you should also take this into account.
- Do you want to play and sing at the same time? If you really want to accompany yourself singing, you might consider going with piano or guitar. It’s no accident that they’re the most popular accompanying instruments for singers.
There are still plenty of other questions to think about, so you should pick your instrument very carefully. If you don’t like it very much or have doubts about it, you will never stick with it. It will take you a lot of time and practice before you will start to see the results before you become good at it. So it will take a lot of work and patience. And if you’re not in love with the instrument you chose for yourself, you will probably finish your learning before you will start getting results.
